The Oracle of Delphi: Past and Present

The Oracle of Delphi – A Historical Overview

The Oracle of Delphi was the most revered and significant prophetic center of ancient Greece. Established around the 8th century BC, it remained active until the 4th century AD. The priestesses of Apollo, known as Pythias, delivered prophecies that guided rulers, citizens, and even military campaigns. Believers thought that the prophecies were direct answers from Apollo, facilitated by the sacred vapors rising from the earth.
